Happy employees generally mean more productivity and success for your business. But how can you keep your employees happy and engaged? Here’s some tips on how to drive employee morale and performance:
- Regularly recognize people for a job well done. The number one reason Americans leave their job is because they don’t feel appreciated. In fact, 65% of people asked said they got no recognition for good work in the last year. Good employees are hard to find and better to retain. Losing an employee can cost you both time and money, so show them the recognition they deserve, whether it be employee of the moth or a just telling them “nice job!”
- Encourage peer-to-peer recognition. Peer-to-peer recognition programs are another way to recognize employees and an internal way to promote a better work environment. After all, employee’s coworkers are the ones who know them best. Allow your employees to participate in designing the type of peer-to-peer recognition system in your business. If they are involved in the decision, they are more likely to participate, which is key. Examples of peer-to-peer recognition systems include recognition raffles, let the most kudos win, and the company store.
- Pay and train your employees well. Paying and training employees well is an endless cycle to a successful business. High quality labor leads to good operational execution, leading to high sales and profits, which leads to higher labor budgets, all circling back to better quality labor.
- Empower your employees with better tools. Whether it’s hardware or software, introducing the newest tools and technology can drastically improve the productivity of your business and employees. The difference between a clunky cash register and a new POS device can make all the difference (especially for the appeal) for your business. Figure out if it’s worth the upgrade, but remember to think in the long-term and employee satisfaction.
- Hire A-players. Hiring the best employee is clearly a good idea, but there are certain benefits that you may not have thought of. According to Harvard Business Review, department-level output productivity increases by 54% after hiring an A-player. There are two explanations to this, the first being that hiring A-players leads to that person aiding in the recruitment process of better employees. The second is that the A-player shares their productivity secrets with other employees. Bottom line- they’re worth it.
Making your employees satisfied is a recipe for productivity, not disaster. Although some of these methods take minimal effort, they have drastic effects on employees. Show your employees they’re worth it and give them a reason to stay rather than a reason to leave.
