Do you want to succeed in business? According to Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, there are 10 things you need to do:
- Follow your dreams. Creating a business around something your passionate about will keep you doing what you love and loving what you do. Staying interested can keep from becoming stressed and focused too much on figures and quarterly goals.
- Do some good. Starting a business means creating something that people want and will make their lives easier. Any way to make your customer’s and your community’s life better, do it!
- Believe in your ideas: Give your venture everything you’ve got. Being confident and constantly inspired by your business is an important aspect of a successful business and the people inside it. If you don’t believe in your own ideas, how are your employees supposed to? Lead by example and persevere!
- Have fun, and make sure that your team members are enjoying themselves too. You and your team members are responsible for creating a company culture and the image behind the brand. If you continue to show this to customers, customers will not only enjoy your business, but will see a brand focused on the customers, not just the numbers.
- Don’t give up. There will be setbacks within your business and there will be times where you feel like giving up. Tenaciously sticking to your business is the only way to succeed, especially when realizing that your competitors face similar problems.
- Listen, take lots of notes and keep setting yourself new challenges. Listening enhance communication between employees and customers, and thus the relationships that come along with it. Whether it be suggestions or complaints, these can both be utilized to improve your business. Use customer and employee feedback to set new goals and keep to them.
- Delegate, and spend more time with your family. Delegating work is important for any growing business, because you can’t do it all. Hire talent for your weaknesses. Freeing up time for important tasks and spending time with family is most important in the end.
- Communicate, collaborate and communicate some more. One thing Apple does best is creating a work environment that encourages collaboration. For any business, working together can generate more ideas and create better relationships between employees.
- Turn off your laptop and iPhone, and get out there. What you do outside the workplace affects how you do in it. Being able to relax and rest is just as important as the multiple hours you put in at work. The best work is done with a clear, well-rested mind, so take responsibility for your body like you would your business.
- Do what you love, and keep a couch in the kitchen. Being around the people you enjoy the most and doing what you love is all you can hope for. Luckily, being in charge of your own business, you can do both, but remember the importance of staying focused.
Having a successful business doesn’t just mean managing budgets and developing products. It’s all about finding the enjoyment out of what you do so that you don’t waste time doing something you don’t enjoy. Find out what inspires you and live your life doing it!
